Due to stricter emission requirements, almost all newer machines are equipped with a so-called SCR system in the catalytic converter. What this system does is convert nitrogen oxide into water and nitrogen, making the exhaust gases much less bad for the environment. The well-known Ad-Blue is injected into the catalytic converter which causes this process to take place. Ad-Blue is actually nothing more than about 2/3 water and 1/3 urea. Hence, the ad-blue filter is often called urea filter. Replacing the ad-blue or urea filter on time prevents the injection from clogging up and damaging your SCR system and catalyst.
